Periodontology

Periodontology is the branch of Dentistry that studies the tissues and pathologies of the periodontium, consisting of the tissues that surround and support the tooth, such as the gingiva, the bone and periodontal ligament. Periodontal disease (once called "pyorrhea") damages the tissues of the periodontium and can even lead to tooth loss, but can be stopped if it is treated in time.

The causes of paradontitis:

  • bacteria;
  • smoke;
  • illnesses;
  • Periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease

It is caused in most cases by the bacterial infections (the so-called bacterial plaque). Smoking or diabetes play a very important role in creating of this disease. In any case we can save the remaining teeth, and replace the lost ones with implantology or a dental prosthesis. With the use of a modern technology even the bone destroyed by periodontal disease can be successfully regenerated.

The most common diseases of the periodontium

  • The Gingivitis is very common ilness affecting up to 90% of people. Bleeding of the gum while brushing our teeth is a first symptom.
  • The Periodontitis is not as common like the gingivitis, it is more complicated and therefore should be treated very carefully. Accumulation of bacterial plaque on the surface of the teeth can cause infection to the deeper tissues, the bone, the periodontal ligament and the root. Often the result is unfortunately the destruction of the tissues that hold the fixed tooth. When it’s not cured properly, during the time passed, the teeth begin to move and they can even fall spontaneously.

How to cure periodontitis

Anyone can, in the course of his life, suffer from periodontitis, even adolescents, with a course that can be more or less rapid, depending on the severity of the disease itself.

Periodontitis therapy consists of 3 phases

  • First of all, the plaque on the teeth must be eliminated above and below the gingival edge.
  • The tooth must be cleaned under the gingival border with appropriate tools.
  • The third step is to use a laser to sterilize the roots of the teeth.
  • The procedure is painless and does not cause any discomfort.

In severe cases, this type of treatment can be followed by minor surgical procedures to eliminate infection and inflammation of the tissues in the deepest periodontal pockets.

As a conclusion, we can say that the most important thing is a proper daily dental hygiene. All you need is a good toothbrush with soft bristles which should be used with small circular movements, preferably without pressure. This is the best way to avoid this type of problems.
